Pre-K Teaches Skills Expected of Students Entering Into Kindergarten
Among the ways we help preschoolers get ready for kindergarten is teaching language, math, motor, and self-care skills. The Pennsylvania Department of Education uses the Kindergarten Entry Inventory (KEI) to assess and determine kindergarten readiness. At Little Wiggles & Giggles Learning Center, many of our preschoolers that graduate to kindergarten can:
- Understand directions in two steps
- Pay attention for five minutes to an adult-lead task
- Use their words to express their needs and their wants
- Recite the alphabet in its entirety
- Identify most of the letters in the alphabet
- Use a pencil or crayon with some control
- Put together a simple puzzle
- Count from one to 20 without skipping numbers
- Recognize and name basic shapes
- Use the bathroom and wash up without assistance
- Know and can say their first and last name and age
- Interact amicably with other children
