How to Instill Good Homework Habits in Your School-Aged Children
Homework is par for the course when your child goes to school. At Little Wiggles & Giggles Learning Center, we gladly help the school-aged children in our care with homework. If they run out of time to finish before going home, here are some tips for instilling good homework habits:
- Establish the same place to do homework every day that is well lit, quiet, and distraction-free.
- Create and stick to a homework routine. Examples – “homework from 7 to 8 p.m.,” “30 minutes of play, then homework,” or “homework before video games.”
- Help your child get focused and organized, but insist that your child do the work himself or herself. (PS: The established location and routine should be mutually agreed upon by you and your child.)
- Look over your child’s homework occasionally and give positive feedback about his or her correct work. If you find errors, avoid criticizing the child. Instead, review the work together and try to narrow down where your child has difficulty.
- Stay in touch with teachers about your child’s challenges or lack thereof with the homework assignments. Perhaps the teacher will adjust things to match your child’s capabilities.
